Backyard Grill Chef AR VR App

Industry: Retail and E-commerce
Location: Switzerland
Timeline: 3 months
Project type: Mobile AR VR app development

1. Client Background

A backyard grill retailer wanted to reduce showroom dependency by letting customers preview a selected grill in their own backyard or patio through a mobile AR VR app. The solution made it easier to evaluate real scale, visual fit, and style in a real environment before purchase.

2. Challenge

  • Product photos failed to communicate real scale, fit, and visual match in a customer’s backyard or patio.
  • Customers needed a faster way to compare models and quickly grasp size, color, and shape before buying.
  • The AR VR experience had to stay smooth on mobile while keeping realistic product visuals.
  • A major technical obstacle came from source 3D assets: the client provided industrial-grade 3D CAD grill models straight from production, extremely detailed and heavy, with files reaching up to 1 GB per model, beyond what a typical mobile AR VR app can handle.
  • Model optimization became part of the challenge: we involved a dedicated 3D artist, rebuilt each grill model, and optimized geometry and textures, keeping visual fidelity while cutting file size significantly.

3. Solution & Approach

We built a mobile AR VR application powered by AR VR and Computer Vision that lets users place a realistic 3D grill model into a real environment and view it from different angles.

Technology Stack: React Native, Node.js, Firebase (ML Kit, Storage), HTML5, CSS3, npm.
Project Approach: Custom mobile development, iterative delivery.
Team Composition: Mobile developers, backend developer, 3D specialist, QA, PM.

Feature Highlights:

  • Real-world grill placement in AR VR through a smartphone camera
  • Model preview with realistic scale and perspective
  • Quick model switching for comparison
  • Smooth user flow focused on faster decision-making

4. Execution

  • Built the mobile AR VR experience in React Native with Computer Vision support.
  • Implemented backend services for model storage and delivery.
  • Optimized the AR VR flow to stay simple and reliable for everyday users.
  • Tested across devices to ensure stable performance and correct object placement.

5. Results & Business Impact

  • Shorter buyer journey through faster product visualization.
  • Better customer confidence when choosing a grill model.
  • A more engaging shopping experience that supports conversion.

6. Client Feedback Summary

“The AR VR app changed how customers evaluate grills online. Instead of guessing from photos, they can place a model in their own backyard, check the real scale, and compare options in seconds. We saw fewer pre-sale questions, quicker decisions, and a much more engaging shopping experience that supports conversions.” – Backyard Grill Retailer team

7. Lessons Learned / Best Practices

AR VR retail apps succeed when the user flow stays simple and the 3D models remain visually realistic while being optimized for mobile performance.

8. Future Improvements & Features

  • More product customization options (color, accessories)
  • Saved scenes and shareable previews for family decision-making
  • Analytics on which models are viewed most in AR VR
  • Better onboarding for first-time AR VR users
